Duality and Unity: Exploring the Essence of Gemini Season

Metaphorcast for the week of 5/29, 2023

Happy Memorial Day to all. I hope the barbeque was flavorful and the weather was favorable. May the candy have rained well over the outstretched hands of the kiddies. In my town, the firetrucks like to hose everyone down at the end, so let’s hope it was a warm and sunny day.

Gemini Season is here, offering plenty of different new avenues of attention. Just like a parade, if you stare too long at the band you might miss what’s happening on the float. But the parade is here to celebrate something bigger than its parts. That is the essence of Gemini Season: seeing a glimpse of the whole through expressions of the various and intricate parts.

The Memorial Day parade is a celebration of honor, that is the whole emerging from its many colorful and spirited parts. The whole is easily seen in any of the parts, like a hologram.  It is seen in the perseverance of a trombone player whose hat is slipping down from the sweat. It is seen through the bigness of the firetrucks and the faces of awestruck toddlers. It is readily felt  through the many waving hands within the larger wave of celebration.

As the hero knows, the whole is bigger than the sum of its parts. It is our relationship with bigness that encourages both humility and immensity within.

The nature of light is dual, as it is both a particle and a wave. The same is true for people. They are particles of individuality. But get one of those individualities to start a wave on the sidelines of a parade and they become part of a wave. Just like light, we are both. We are individuals yet part of the wave of humanity. To participate in this wave evokes a natural sense of honor.

The Moon is waxing its way towards fullness all week. It will be big and glorious on Saturday in Sagittarius, the unity of meaning that emerges from Gemini’s duality. The poet e.e. Cummings famously said “One is not half of two: two are halves of one.”

Deep down in the rabbit hole of Gemini’s mind games emerges something bright and unified. A light that exists long before words, thoughts or things. Because we speak about these things, and look at these things, we find ourselves in opposition to these things, in other words, in a duality. But the meaning that unites people in agreement is the same essence of the meaning that magnifies one’s existence in the presence of a majestic mountain, or a colorful garden. There is a force that unites because this force exists before duality. There is a part of nature that exists prior to our seeing it or thinking of it. But by prior I don’t mean said and done, like a big bang theory or the dinosaurs that once roamed the earth. I mean it is a given. It is here now, and it exists before any instant of thought or perception. It is given to you as a gift. The question becomes, is it worth finding? Is it worth that extra mental effort to see the meaning of something, or the willingness to shake off preconceptions in the presence of something new?

As always, happy nature pondering!
