The planets orbit around the sun because the sun’s mass is so powerful. The planets fall into orbit like a person falls in love. Yet the planet that we stand on is earth, not mars. And the body that you inhabit is yours not mine. These two ideas; one of a shared central light and the other of the many varying vantage points is how individuality drives evolution with the potential to keep it healthy and robust. You are unique, with the privacy of thought and feeling, and you are part of a solar system. This is to say that you are part of something much bigger than yourself, and because you are human, you can know this to be true. If the sun were the only light that was the true center then we would never be able to recognize it the way that we do. We would never be able to draw such parallels as “the sun will come out tomorrow” to lift someone’s spirits. We wouldn’t feel things for songs like “here comes the sun” and we wouldn’t be capable of recognizing sunny personalities and the ‘light’ of laughter, love and learning. These are things that we recognize, that is we see the light of their meanings. Because we can see the light of these meanings and feel them to be true, we can know for certain that another ‘sun’ exists from the inside. There is another source of robust light and heat with so much mass that it causes all other components to fall into orbit. And it occurs in the individual. We are made this way to recognize this light and share it. In this way these two ‘centers’ are joined: that of sun and earth.
