I remember reading that Dolly Parton often skipped out on sleep to maximize her productive hours. I recall her describing in an interview how she would fall asleep in the car right after being on the set with Porter Wagner, fully made up, and get only an hour of sleep at night before doing it all again the next day (without needing to put the makeup back on!).

What I didn’t know, until researching it today, was that she routinely woke up at 3 am to write, to think, and to have quality and productive alone time before the rest of the world woke up. With a legal pad and a recorder, and a “cup of ambition,” she would write while the feelings were fresh and unclouded by excessive thought.

I have noticed in these seasonally darker mornings how much quieter the outdoor scene is until the sun rises. It is so charming to think of the many, many mornings like this that Dolly tapped out a rhythm with acrylic nails, hummed a destined-for-stardom melody, or played with words.
Dolly Parton is a Capricorn, and a strong one at that. With Venus conjunct her Sun in Capricorn, her taste is for such blissful discipline, the kind that feels like freedom, like a secret power that you wield when you manage to create from a quiet, structured, and true-to-yourself place.

She was up before the world woke up, perhaps even before she had to wake up to the world, which must have been so busy for her with fame, tour dates, and all that. She customized her tour buses with a built-in kitchen and a small writing nook so her 3:00 AM routine remained completely unbroken, regardless of where she was. Because she was up so early, the world could wait, and with such discipline, she was able to give so much more back to the world.
She was also famous for being immaculately put together right away in the morning, “Earthquake ready,” as she put it. It was an internal ordering system. Being fully put together was her baseline; it put her in character as a working professional and kept her prepared for whatever the world threw at her.
Energy fields thrive on such authentic ordering, where life becomes the art of one’s true taste. Dolly is a shining example of leaning into these callings inside, making the right routines to nourish them, and following the path that only you can follow.
